Insider Paris: Linda Donahue’s Parisien Salon

linda croppedPhotos by Linda Donahue

A self-proclaimed wanderer and observer, Linda Donahue knows how to make herself at home. A writer and photographer by trade, Linda has built a career around roaming, exploring, and simply getting to know the ins-and-outs of cities around the world. Her latest project is Parisien Salon, a recently launched online magazine that aims to create a “virtual Paris” that will transport readers to the city and offer resources for those planning actual journeys. As with all of her projects, Linda prioritizes quality over quantity, and she is determined to provide her readers—both remote and local—with a true insider’s view of Paris. After five years in development, Parisien Salon launched in May of 2009, and with new features being added all the time, we can’t wait to see how the site develops! Continue Reading »

Da Carmine – Napoli in Paris. Pizza & terrace on rue des Martyrs

DaCarmineTerrace & Pizza Da Carmine. Photo Erica Berman

Last Wednesday was perfect weather in Paris (not a common occurrence) and I was having dinner with good friends. What better time to find a terrace to dine on and enjoy the setting sun and breeze? Unfortunately, despite the fact that it is mid-August, and rumor is that there is no one around, everywhere I called was fully booked. I wasn’t the only one with the novel idea of an outdoor dinner. So, where to go to enjoy the evening?

Well, just down the street from my Montmartre apartment, the local neighborhood pizza joint Da Carmine consistently churns out delicious pizzas non-stop from 18:30 to 23:30 Monday to Saturday. Continue Reading »

HiP Paris Eats: Communal-Style Dining

GLOUGlou Restaurant – Picture by Erica Berman

Our friends over at Parisien Salon, a website with great tips on things to do in Paris, recently posted  a helpful list of tasty restaurants that feature canteen-style (communal) tables. Perfect for large groups, eavesdropping on your neighbor’s conversation or making new friends, communal tables offer diners a more relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy their meals.

“Whether they be arty, chic, historic or regressive, Parisian canteens have in recent years defined a new style of eatery. Now found in all districts, they’re putting an air of hospitality back into gastronomy and reshaping the rules of dining. (…) Continue Reading »

Neighborhood Spotlight: A day in the Marais

PDVbannersmall

The Marais is one of Paris’ oldest and most famous neighborhoods. Home to scores of galleries, shops, cafés and restaurants and riddled with narrow cobble-stoned streets, it is one of the best Parisian neighborhoods to explore for the leisurely stroller.

The Marais (literally meaning “marshland”) originally designated the geography of this small area astride the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. Arguably the center of Paris in terms of fashion, art, nightlife and people-watching, chic pedestrians – tourists and locals alike – can be found wandering the small, cobble-stoned streets lined with old hotels particuliers, slanting stone facades and museums hidden behind lush interior courtyards. The Marais is also one of Paris’ oldest Jewish neighborhoods, and on Sundays the picturesque rue des Rosiers fills with Parisians fiending for Paris’ best chalah and fallafel. Continue Reading »

Architectural Paris with Michael Herrman

michael-portait2

With real estate prices declining and more unique living spaces becoming available to buyers, it’s an exciting time to be practicing architecture in Paris. I recently chatted with American architect Michael Herrman about the challenges and rewards of working in a city where contemporary design is finding its place amid some of Europe’s most revered historical architecture. Michael brings a fresh point-of-view to this paradox, maintaining that the most inspired architecture arises from the intersection of new and old, classic and modern, existing and imagined. In his recently launched private practice, he will continue to explore these dichotomies as he makes his mark on Paris. Continue Reading »

Jonesing for Gelato in Paris – Caramella – rue des Martyrs

Caramella

I’ve been back from Italy 8 days now. I am settling nicely into my Parisian rhythm, but I still heed the call for gelato. As I thought luck would have it, there is an Italian-owned gelato shop, Caramella, right around the corner from me on the rue des Martyrs. Continue Reading »

Cul de Poule – Chicken’s arse or mixing bowl, in any case interesting dining!

CDP

After reading David Lebovitz’s super upbeat post and Geneviève’s gently scathing article about the Cul de Poule restaurant, I was unsure whether I would find a trendy hipster resto with snooty servers and less than average food, or a stylish bistro for those in the know. When my friend, food critic and chef Rosa Jackson invited me to join her to test it out for the Time Out restaurant guide, I was pleased to accept and eager to find out what it was all about.

Sassy Summer Recipes from Rachel Khoo

rosestraw_mnAll Photos courtesy of www.rkhooks.net
and www.rachelkhoo.com

Rachel Khoo, one of our favorite Paris foodies, has been cooking up a storm all summer, jetting (or EuroStar-ing) between Paris and London to bring her unique brand of “creative cookery” to hungry crowds on both sides of the Channel. In May, she had the opportunity to cook for a super-secret-underground concert by Beirut, one of the most innovative and fun bands around today. Beirut always puts on a good show, and Rachel never fails in the kitchen, so we couldn’t wait to hear what she cooked up for this event.  Continue Reading »

Slow Travels Through Europe

Ecoles-Panorama-5View from the Ecoles apartment where Pauline stayed – Photo Barbara van Zanten. www.europaphotogenica.com

Pauline Kenny, founder & owner of www.sloweurope.com, can be difficult to track down.  After renting a 2 bedroom in the Latin Quarter through Haven in Paris, Pauline and her husband Steve embarked upon an extended trip through Europe, staying in a variety of vacation rentals along the way.  You might wonder how they manage the time and resources for such a long stay. Over the years, they have made travel a priority and have created for themselves a more flexible and independent working life in order to do so – in fact, they are often able to take trips such as this once or twice a year.

With such a wealth of knowledge and experience, we thought Pauline would be the perfect person to speak with about the vacation rentals industry. We were able to catch up with her while she and Steve were staying in a chalet apartment in Nendaz, Switzerland. Continue Reading »
