Le Beaujolais Nouveau Est Arrivé! (Well, almost…)

beaujolaisPhoto courtesy of French Wine a Day

While those of us in the U.S. look forward to the fourth Thursday of November – our beloved Thanksgiving holiday – in France, it is the third Thursday of the month that has become a day to celebrate. It is on this day that producers of Beaujolais Nouveau, a wine hailing from the region near Lyon, are first allowed to sell their wine made from this year’s harvest. So this coming Thursday, exactly one week before we sit down and tuck into our feasts of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and apple pie, our French counterparts will be uncorking bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau and tasting this year’s version of the young, often light red wine made from grapes harvested earlier this fall.

I Know How To Cook – Ginette Mathiot’s Classic Cookbook translated: Chocolate & Zucchini’s Clotilde Dusoulier at WH Smith in Paris – Tuesday, Nov. 17

i know how to cook

Our friend Clotilde Dusoulier (of Chocolate and Zucchini) has helped to edit the English version of Ginette Mathiot’s classic french cookbook, Je Sais Cuisiner. This book is the bible of French cooking and can be found in just about every French kitchen (Fanny Farmer or The Joy of Cooking would be the American equivalents). When I spoke to Clotilde last spring, she was wrapping up the project, and this Tuesday, November 17, at 7pm, she will be at WH Smith to publicize the book—on shelves now in France and the United States. The event will also mark the 6th anniversary of Chocolate and Zucchini, Clotilde’s wildly successful food blog that put her on the map as one of today’s best culinary bloggers. Continue Reading »

Paris by Appointment Only: YSL’s Country Home Blow Out at Christie’s France

Our friend Zeva Bellel at Paris by Appointment Only has the inside scoop on the upcoming auction of country home furnishings of deceased designer Yves St. Laurent. If you have a chance to attend the auction from November 17-20, you could own a piece of fashion history. If not, you can gawk with us from the sidelines!

The dismantling of a collection of objects amassed with care and love over a lifetime can be a rather somber affair. Especially when it belongs to the dearly departed Yves Saint Laurent. Yet after the very serious, very lucrative auction this past February of the masterpieces he and his partner Pierre Bergé collected, the upcoming second YSL sale at Christie’s France has a lighthearted, uplifting air about it. A Chat with Jeweler Beatrice Knoch: Check Out Her Studio This Weekend at Montmartre’s “Portes Ouvertes”

This weekend, HiP friend and jeweler Beatrice Knoch is participating in “Portes Ouvertes” in Montmartre. This is a great opportunity to stop by her atelier (work and living space) to see her unique jewelry and to meet the woman behind the designs! German-born but Paris-based for the past 9 years, Beatrice sat down with HIP to discuss her career as a jewelry designer and the things she loves about life in Paris and Montmartre.

Interview by Erica Berman, Edited by Tory Hoen

HiP:  Have you always wanted to be a jewelry designer?

BK: No, at first I wanted to practice medicine. I studied Latin, worked in a hospital, etc.

HiP: What did you study?

BK: In the end, I did Islamic Studies for two years—Turkish and Arabic and all that—at Freiburg in Germany.

HiP: When did you come to France, and where in Germany are you from?

BK:   It wasn’t until I began my career as a jewelry designer. I did my studies in Germany, in Pforzheim, on the edge of the Black Forest, where I grew up.

Le Verre Volé: My Favorite Boozy Wine Bar in Paris

verrePhoto: linternaute.com

What is it about France that makes me feel like it’s OK to drink an entire bottle of wine at midday? I guess it’s the fact that there are so many places that make it easy—almost impossible not—to do just that.

My hands-down favorite spot in Paris for a boozy Sunday lunch is Le Verre Volé, the quintessential Parisian wine bar and living proof that simplicity is the secret to happiness—and deliciousness. There’s nothing better than a leisurely lunch of shared small plates and an interesting bottle of wine, followed by a drunken amble along the Canal St. Martin (I have yet to fall in!), most likely followed by a nap. Afternoons like this make me wonder, “Does life get any better than this?” and I always come to the same conclusion: nope. Continue Reading »

“Was There Life Before the Counter?” Meg Zimbeck Reviews Paris’ New Wine Bar L’Avant Comptoir

Paris-based freelance food and travel writer Meg Zimbeck (who contributes to the wonderful new blog Girls Guide to Paris) hits up l’Avant Comptoir, a great new wine bar in the 6th…

avantcomptoir4

by Meg Zimbeck

Last night marked my fourth visit to l’Avant Comptoir in just over a week. This new wine bar is nowhere near my apartment, so why am I returning again and again? It’s the ham. To be precise, it’s the deep-fried ham croquettes. Made with jambon Ibaïona d’Eric Ospital (a Pays Basque ham from a legendary producer), these little nuggets are like eating, as the Frenchman next to me observed, “une caresse.” Priced at only 3 euros for a stack of three, they represent the cheapest love for sale in the French capital.
