Sugar Daze, the former Little Miss Cupcake, has been sweetening everyone’s taste buds for the past 4 years with her smashing, internet-only, cupcake business. Cat is also one of the organizers of the annual Cupcake Camp event in Paris, where bakers, both amateur and professional alike, unite with their cupcakes to raise money to donate to the Make A Wish Foundation. This year the event will take place on Saturday, October 27 at Le Comptoir Général. You can find out more on the Cupcake Camp Paris Facebook Page.
In honor of this year’s Paris Cupcake Camp, I stopped by to have a little chat with Cat, my favorite Parisian Cupcaker (and a New Yorker to boot!). I started out by asking her when she got into cupcakes: “I have been baking FOREVER! I just love cupcakes. There is so much you can do with them. The flavor possibilities are endless and there are so many ways to dress them up or down. I also like that they are the perfect size for individual snacking!”
Cat started her cupcake business unexpectedly in 2008 around Halloween, when a friend discovered her delicious cupcakes and asked her to bake for her. At the time, cupcakes were new to Paris, and many French people didn’t even know what they were. Cat entered the market with something new to offer: authentic American cupcakes. Although her business started out small, faced with overwhelming success through word-of-mouth referrals, Cat had no choice but to expand. The proof is in the pudding (or in the batter, in this case): Cat just opened up her own bake shop in the trendy 9th district of Paris this summer, at 20, rue Henri Monnier.
Having always been inspired by the music she listens to, Cat has given a funky personality to her brand’s cakes with original names and unique spunky deco that will make you want to put your favorite record on. As she explains, “I love music, always have. I always bake to music and I love being inspired by what I listen to. Many of my cupcakes are named after songs or lyrics – coming up with new names is one of the most fun parts of the job! For example, one of our newest flavors is called “I Love Rock n Roll.” It’s our version of the Rocky Road cupcake. Or our coconut lime cupcake which is called “Sweet Thai O’ Mine.” The Sugar Daze shop is in South Pigalle, which is like the music capital of Paris, so it all just comes together nicely. I think it’s also a bit of my own personal rebellion against the frilly pink imagery you so often see associated with cupcakes”.
Sugar Daze cupcakes are authentic American cupcakes and can be ordered for events, tea parties, or any reason you can think up. Now with the new shop officially open, you can also stop by and grab one or five cupcakes to gobble up on the go-go.
