Sometimes the French just get it right.  For the 20 years preceding the buzzy unveiling of Manhattan’s Highline Park, Parisians have quietly enjoyed their own walk-in-the-sky: the promenade plantée, a 4.5-kilometer respite from the often overbearing honks and crowds that can conquer even the best-planned day in Paris (the best laid schemes of mice and men and all of that).  This respite is a garden, a journey, a picnic; it’s a moment to breathe and walk under an arcade of trees and colors; a moment to appreciate the marriage between nature and architecture.  The promenade plantée is Paris’ very own elevated park. It seems that Daniel Rose (owner and chef of Spring and Table 28) can do no wrong. Guest blogger Wendy Lyn of The Paris Kitchen stopped by for a tour of his just-opened Spring boutique… here’s a sneak peak!

American chef, restaurateur and entrepreneur Daniel Rose sent out a massive SMS invitation to lucky in-the-know guests to come to the new Spring Boutique opening last night. (If you haven’t heard of Daniel Rose or his Spring restaurant, just do a basic Google search and put on your seatbelt.)

His timing was perfect as it coincided with the much-celebrated arrival of this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau. To say that it was crowded is an understatement – the tiny space was packed and spilling out into the streets. Continue Reading »

The dismantling of a collection of objects amassed with care and love over a lifetime can be a rather somber affair. Especially when it belongs to the dearly departed Yves Saint Laurent. Yet after the very serious, very lucrative auction this past February of the masterpieces he and his partner Pierre Bergé collected, the upcoming second YSL sale at Christie’s France has a lighthearted, uplifting air about it. “Was There Life Before the Counter?” Meg Zimbeck Reviews Paris’ New Wine Bar L’Avant Comptoir

Paris-based freelance food and travel writer Meg Zimbeck (who contributes to the wonderful new blog Girls Guide to Paris) hits up l’Avant Comptoir, a great new wine bar in the 6th…

by Meg Zimbeck

Last night marked my fourth visit to l’Avant Comptoir in just over a week. This new wine bar is nowhere near my apartment, so why am I returning again and again? It’s the ham. To be precise, it’s the deep-fried ham croquettes. Made with jambon Ibaïona d’Eric Ospital (a Pays Basque ham from a legendary producer), these little nuggets are like eating, as the Frenchman next to me observed, “une caresse.” Priced at only 3 euros for a stack of three, they represent the cheapest love for sale in the French capital.
