Le Tout Monde: Authentic Dining & Natural Wine in the 18ème’s Goutte d’Or

My favorite dining companion never fails to strike up a conversation when we’re in a restaurant- sometimes with a neighboring table, often with the server or sommelier. So it was no surprise that he immediately hit it off with the owner of Le Tout Monde when we enjoyed an apéro and entrées there on a rainy evening. The conversation quickly turned to vin nature – a shared passion, it turns out – and mutual acquaintances in the small community of French natural winemakers.

The cozy bistrot in the Goutte d’Or neighborhood of the 18th arrondissement had recently hosted a few friends for an event. “I’m not trying to hold big tastings here or anything,” the friendly patron humbly explained, “I’m just happy to host friends.” Being a good host is clearly a priority in this charming wine bar and restaurant, where everyone feels like a friend.

Hardware Société: Paris’ Newest Australian-Breakfast Import

When the Australian café-inspired restaurant Holybelly opened in the 10th arrondissement, it revolutionized morning meals in Paris. The all-day breakfast menu, which combined classic eggs and sides with more refined seasonal mains, was the first of its kind in a city where breakfasts are continental and Anglo-inspired dining often fail to inspire.

Three years later and people still line up at Holybelly’s doors before opening, waiting to taste the new monthly menu, come back for their favorite permanent menu classics, or enjoy the special weekend menu. Despite the restaurant’s rampant success and the undeniable demand for the a solid breakfast joint in Paris, Holybelly remains an anomaly in the bacon-and-eggs breakfast scene. At least, until recently.

At L’Épicerie des Environs, you’ll find a local – or nearly local – version of just about everything you need to make a delicious dinner (and even clean up after): fruit and vegetables, rice from Camargue, pickles from Burgundy, fruity sorbet from Essonne, and even dish soap made in neighboring Vallée de Chevreuse.

The épicerie, or general store, opened four months ago. It’s quite at home in this corner of the 18th arrondissement, where a handful of other independent food stores and neighborhood restaurants are livening a neighborhood that had lost its flair. While corner shops still exist in every arrondissement, today most of them resemble late-night superettes. Owner Sandrine Cheikh’s idea was to create the kind of épicerie that used to exist in Paris, a place to stock up on all the basics. “I didn’t want to limit it to an épicerie fine, either,” she explains. “That’s why there’s a corner, for example, for beauty products and cleaning supplies.”

What must be this year’s most anticipated brasserie address in Paris finally opened its doors this April after a two-year refurbishment. While Brasserie Barbès has been criticized for being too expensive, contributing to making the unpolished Barbès neighborhood too “bobo,” and for having to queue for a table, the staff makes patrons feel welcome just as they are – whether they’re from this generation or the one before last, and whether they’re wearing scruffy trainers from their teenage years or have seemingly just stepped out of Vogue.

The brasserie sits on a street corner in the 18th arrondissement’s Barbès neighborhood, in the location of the former Vano discount shop and just across the street from the Louxor cinema, an Art Deco masterpiece. In fact, the new venue also comes with its own South Floridian Art Deco swing, echoed in its enormous bay windows, glitzy brass lighting fixtures, and flower-patterned carpets.

When Martine Boutin left corporate life in Paris’ La Défense business district to become her own boss, she first considered opening a dating agency or a cheese restaurant. Instead, she opted to open a retro-style grocery shop near the mairie of the 18th arrondissement, to keep the neighborhood stocked with products that are often only available at farm shops in the countryside.

Bob’s Bake Shop: A Slice of New York in Paris’ 18th Arrondissement

When he opened his first spot, Bob’s Juice Bar, in 2006, Marc Grossman says he was driven by a simple desire to bring a little of New York to Paris. “It was something from back home, something I missed, health food, juice bars,” says Grossman. The born-and-bred New Yorker, who at one time worked on Wall Street, decided to move to Paris 15 years ago. He married a French girl and never left.

Since opening his first café, he has almost single-handedly changed Parisian’s dining habits for the better, introducing them to things like green juice and rice bowls he calls “Veggie Stew.” However, he says his goal was never to push a health food agenda, but rather serve organic, wholesome, tasty food. “We’re not extreme,” says Grossman. “We have muffins, but we also have salads. We try to mix it up.”

La REcyclerie: Head North of Montmartre for Urban Gardening & Eclectic Food & Drink

HiP Paris Blog, La Recyclerie, Isabel Miller-Bottome DSC_0031 Up until recently, the only reason people passed through Porte de Clignancourt, on the outskirts of the 18th arrondissement, was for the famous Marché aux puces antique market in St. Ouen. The creation of Les Jardins du Ruisseau, a community garden located on the abandoned platforms of the city’s former commuter rail system, increased the appeal of this rough-around-the-edges area, attracting urban explorers and city picnickers since the gardens opened their doors almost ten years ago.
