Recently, we’ve received a ton of inquiries from readers who all want to know the same thing: “What do I pack for my trip to Paris?” It’s a tricky question, as the answer is often dictated by the season, your “travel style,” and your own personal fashion sense. Luckily, Badaude, one of our favorite illustrators, has provided a quick tutorial on can’t-go-wrong Paris packing. Enjoy!

Packing for Paris can be a tricky business. There are a few things to take into account, but only one of them is truly important (two if you count the umbrella). How long will I be staying? How much do I want/will my method of transport allow me to carry? What will the weather be like? What will I be doing? These are important, sure, but successful packing for any destination is as much about the dream as the reality, and planning can be a satisfying mental mini-break. So, for Paris, take only the clothes you can imagine yourself wearing as you walk through the Tuilleries, cross the Pont Neuf, or sit in Café de Flore (so long as you also remember to take the umbrella…). Stylish, understated accessorizing—there are few things the French do better. Especially the men, and especially when it comes to their scarves. After a decade of careful observation I’m convinced that the entire French male population has been genetically perfected to give good scarf. Believe me, if I had a dollar for ever time a visiting American guy friend asked me to give him a French echarpe tutorial, I’d be a rich lady.

But the next time someone asks I’ll give my neck a rest and introduce Meilleur Ami instead. Launched in November 2008, Meilleur Ami is a new niche Paris-based men’s accessories brand whose name is its promise—to create designs that behave like best friends. Continue Reading »

After taking stock of the latest runway trends, Lilye, personal shopper, blogger and friend of HiP Paris, shares some precious insight on how to navigate a few of this summer’s must-haves. We’re including an excerpt of her post below, but you can check out her entire rundown in French here.
1. A Maritime Hint
The time has come to move away from our favorite sailor shirt, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose the beloved pattern altogether. Dare to wear your stripes with a little subtlety: a ribbon wrapped around your wrist, a turban in your hair, a hint of pattern peeking out of your Antonio Marras ensemble, or even a tastefully decorated purse will do the trick.
Hermes’ latest collection is also making me mad about navy. Don’t dismiss your staple navy blazer! Paired with a simple white t-shirt and a pair of jeans, it’s so very effortlessly chic.

I gave up long ago on the idea that I might ever effectively emulate the effortless chic of your average parisienne. It’s an innate sense of style that one is either born with or without, and it has become abundantly clear who has it (most Parisian women) and who doesn’t (me). I’m OK with this. But upon moving to Paris, I made a shocking discovery: not only do I look like a hobo compared to Parisian women, but also compared to their impeccably dressed children. This was a harder pill to swallow. Continue Reading »
