Paris Through Your Eyes: Unique Photos and Original Stories Wanted

We are currently looking for original contributions and unique pitches from skilled writers and photographers looking for assignments that will whisk them around our beautiful city. Andreas Selter

In my early days of living in Paris fitting in was a struggle. The city and my new French friends seemed like a puzzle to be solved as I stumbled through the steps of navigating Parisian soirées and metro lines. With limited control of the language and no experience living abroad, I depended on my love of all things French to get me through awkward moments and bouts of homesickness.

Living, Loving, Learning: An American Photographer on Starting a New Life in Paris

HiP Paris blog. Living, Learning, Loving. A bride viewed from the top of a Parisian spiral staircase. Photo by Marjorie Preval.

I don’t come from a family of explorers, travelers, or adventurers. My wanderlust has definitely been a learned trait, something that I’ve discovered after spending countless hours Google searching destinations I wished to visit. Needless to say, my parents were a bit shocked when I told them that I had bought tickets for my daughter Kailin and me to move to Paris the winter of 2011. My mother’s concern was that I “didn’t know a soul in all of France,” my dad’s was that I wouldn’t survive without knowing the language.

Armed with their endless words of advice and a handful of helpful phrases, such as “s’il vous plait, aidez-moi trouver les toilettes”(thanks dad !), my then four year-old and I boarded our very first trans-Atlantic flight to the City of Light. I wasn’t prepared for the anxiety attack I would have midway through our redeye, or how much I would fall head over heels once I’d arrived. In a penthouse apartment situated right across from Sacré-Cœur, how could I not fall in love with all that Paris had to offer me?

November Events in Paris: Photography Month, Talib Kweli, Brocante Lab & More

Hip Paris blog. November Events. Brocante Lab. Simple decor yet full of character.

Le Duplex Brocante Lab

Á l’Etoile d’Or was always one of my go-to stops in Paris, both for satiating my own sweet tooth and stocking up on little presents to bring back to the States; a sachet of Henri Le Roux caramels au beurre salé or a bar of Bernachon chocolate prove the perfect gifts. The store experienced a destructive gas explosion last year and devotees of Mme Acabo’s confections were rightfully disheartened. But the beloved shop reopened this week, and we will definitely be paying it a visit soon.

The holiday season has begun in Paris and while the usual lineup of seasonal pop-up events – from ice skating at Hôtel de Ville to the Christmas markets scattered around the city – are back, this December brings a handful of other wonderful events as well.

The Centre Pompidou recently opened a retrospective of cult American artist Jeff Koons’s work. The exhibition is on view until April 27 and features some of the Koons’s most iconic pieces, from a Michael Jackson sculpture to the ever-recognizable oversized balloon animals.

Planning for Paris: Spoiled by Luxury Services in the City of Light

Haven in Paris Victor Hugo Luxe

Haven in Paris, Julien Hausherr

I’ve just booked my Haven in Paris apartment for a week in the City of Love. Sigh… Going to Paris has always been a dream of mine, and I want it to be just perfect. I am working with Haven in Paris to fill my days with the luxury service discounts they are offering during this winter’s low season. While my activities aren’t fully booked, I have already started daydreaming about how I will spend my days.

Parisian Perspectives: A Stroll Through Paris In Black & White

Paris in Black & White, Bicycle, Michael Kandel

Paris is beautiful no matter how you view it, but through a monochrome lens, its true elegance and character become strikingly apparent.

Removing color from a place so rich in fashion, art and culture impresses a fresh perspective upon both the tourist and seasoned resident.
