Beyond Colette: Paris Concept Store Shopping and Dining Bliss

HiP Paris Blog rounds up Paris' best concept store cafesMaison Sarah Lavoine – Francis Amiand

When the archetypical concept store Colette closed last year, loyal locals and tourists alike mourned the end of an era. The 1st arrondissement shop was a Paris institution as well as a trailblazer in the world of concept stores- becoming the example that all others were measured against.

While die hard fans will argue that nothing will ever replace this innovative space and business model, the unique combination of shopping and indulgence that Colette offered can still be found in the capital.

Here’s a list of some of our favorite spots to shop and dine to our hearts content:

Through the Washing Machine: Hidden Cocktails & Small Plates at Lavomatic

Lavomatic, Hidden Cocktails Through a Laundromat in Paris

I recently met a friend in the 10ème late one glorious afternoon – not a cloud in sight. We picked up a bottle of wine, some cheese, and a baguette and headed directly for the Canal St-Martin to join the revellers at the popular waterside hangout.

However, after the chèvre had been demolished, and a buzz kicked in from our nearly empty bottle of wine, we felt the cool chill of the new autumn air pass over us. Not wanting to waste the energy of the evening, I asked my friend, “où peut-on aller?” The immediate area around the canal is bustling with obvious options, but I was eager to seek out somewhere new and exciting. Clearly my friend had come up with something, but the only response I got was, “j’ai une bonne idée – viens!”

Je Suis Paris: Images of Solidarity and Hope in the Face of Tragedy

Je suis Paris. Images of peace and hope. Locals young and old pay tribute to the fallen. Palmyre Roigt for the HiP Paris Blog

Here in Paris the post-tragedy healing process will inevitably be a long one, but in the mere few days since Friday’s brutal attacks, Paris has already shown its great resilience and strength. Restaurants, schools, and shops have reopened; the city’s citizens are back in the streets and at work. They bravely forge forward, proving once again that they will not be overcome. Despite this morning’s police raid in Saint-Denis, the overall feeling in Paris is one of warmth and solidarity.

At the scenes of Friday’s attacks we see no images of hatred, but rather of love and remembrance. It is in living fully every day and working, as a global community, towards real progress and positive change that we can best honor those whose lives were taken.

The following are some images taken over the course of the last few days in Paris.

September Events in Paris: Les Sept Soirées Ensembles, Sneakerness, Sinkane & More

HiP Paris Blog, September Events, park2, sinkane5Park(ing) Day; Sinkane

It is officially la rentrée and Paris is abuzz. September brings Parisians back from their month-long holidays, revived and ready to welcome fall (at least for a few weeks). Here are some of our favorite events around the city this month.

This week kicked off the festival set with Jazz at la Villette (until September 14) and the Festival d’Automne (until December 30), and we continue with the Fête de l’Humanité next weekend (September 12 – 14). Each features concerts, various live performances, and with the weather recently turning to sunny and moderate, there’s really no better way to spend the upcoming week(s).
