Paris Beneath a Veil of Rain

While today’s reprieve from the Paris rain of earlier this week is welcomed, the city has a mysterious way of looking equally as beautiful perched beneath a gray sky and the cover of drizzling rain. Wonderful photographer Rebecca Plotnick shares her stunning rainy Paris images today. Enjoy! -Erin

HiP Paris blog. Paris beneath a veil of rain. Three essentials for Parisian rainy days: a cute umbrella, proper footwear, and a cozy place to watch the rain fall over the rooftops.

“Paris is the most beautiful in the rain.” Woody Allen had it right in Midnight in Paris. Take a walk down rue Montorgueil near Les Halles or Rue Lepic in Montmartre and you can easily feel like you have stepped onto a movie set.

Cobblestone streets, flower shops bursting with colorful blooms, café chairs perfectly aligned, and beautiful dressed Parisians. Out of nowhere the clouds open up and it begins to rain. This is a regular occurrence in Paris, so I find it best to carry an umbrella no matter what the forecast has planned for the day.

Some prefer to sit back and relax, enjoying watching the rain fall while sipping a coffee or tea at the closest café. If you are lucky, you can find a terrace that covers you from the rain but still gives a front-row view of people walking, umbrellas agape. You can either stay inside and avoid the rain or embrace it, love it, and dance in it. The magic happens in Paris when the rain begins to fall.

Rain or Shine, Paris . . . I Love You!

@rgs & Tibö

Oh, Paris, you fooled me again. When I’m away – whether in Boston, L.A. or San Francisco – la vie en rose beckons, making other cities look shabby by comparison. So much so that I forget real life here: the constant manifestations that block your streets, the crottes de chien that decorate your sidewalks, the surly fonctionnaires that populate your public services.

Montmartre after the rain – Magnus D

And most of all, I forget about your weather.

I’m not alone. Movies, songs and countless works of art have celebrated the romance of Parisian weather. In Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, the signature appeal of the protagonist’s dream girl seemed to be her love of getting soaked by la pluie. Continue Reading »

Paris Fashion: Embracing the French Trench

We were blessed with 3 months of near-uninterrupted sunshine. Alas, the fickle Parisian weather dictators have decided that we should wait a little longer before our next late-night dinner en terrasse, never-ending picnic on the Canal Saint Martin or sunbathing on the Ile de la Cité. In honor of the return of the familiar grey sky and blustery days, fabulous writer and illustrator Badaude shares here some sketches of the ubiquitous fickle weather Parisian fashion must: Le Trench Coat. Don’t forget to pack yours! -Geneviève

The Summer That Wasn’t: 20 Paris Rainy Day Solutions from the Locals

Paris Rainy Day ActivitiesPrakhar – Rainy view from Montmartre

Fifty degree weather? Rain? What’s next, sleet? The summer is obviously on vacation somewhere else this year. It packed up and went on a tour of Italy and Spain most likely, because it’s definitely not in Paris! The sun has been taking a big ole dump on my outdoor plans for quite a while now. I’ve been cooped up in my apartment too long, another week of this and I’ll be eligible for the hermit of the year award.

It’s time to brave the weather and see Paris from the inside out. Here are a few things that are tempting me at the moment:

YSL expo at Petit Palais: I’ve heard great things about this exhibit, but haven’t gotten around to going yet! It’s open until this weekend, so I’m down to the wire to get around to doing anything that could give me the slightest insight about how to dress my sorrily-clothed-self.

Kentrige 5 Themes expo at Jeu de Paume: This is by far one of my favorite museums in Paris; the expos never fail to disappoint! This expo looks particularly good. I like that it’s a mix of mediums – drawings, prints, films & all that. This is good because I have a real attention span pro- DID YOU SEE THAT BIRD FLY BY??

Tea at l’Hotel: My friend Rebecca introduced me to this place and it was love at first sight. It’s the perfect place to cozy up and drink your self warm again. Luxurious, a bit swanky, but they’ll let you sit and relax for hours with a good book. (Read: I’m cheap. 5€ is already a lot, so I’m getting my money’s worth!)

And here are suggestions from the Paris experts via Twitter! These people REALLY know their way around the city, you can trust them with your rainy vacation days! Please be sure to check their blogs and add them on Twitter for more insights!! Continue Reading »
