Through the Washing Machine: Hidden Cocktails & Small Plates at Lavomatic

Lavomatic, Hidden Cocktails Through a Laundromat in Paris

I recently met a friend in the 10ème late one glorious afternoon – not a cloud in sight. We picked up a bottle of wine, some cheese, and a baguette and headed directly for the Canal St-Martin to join the revellers at the popular waterside hangout.

However, after the chèvre had been demolished, and a buzz kicked in from our nearly empty bottle of wine, we felt the cool chill of the new autumn air pass over us. Not wanting to waste the energy of the evening, I asked my friend, “où peut-on aller?” The immediate area around the canal is bustling with obvious options, but I was eager to seek out somewhere new and exciting. Clearly my friend had come up with something, but the only response I got was, “j’ai une bonne idée – viens!”

Uptown: An Exciting Neo-bistrot Tucked Away in Montmartre

Uptown Restaurant, Montmartre, Paris

Far from the bustle of central Paris’ boulevards and train stations, Uptown hides in the Northern part of the 18ème, one of a few areas in the city to retain a quiet, village-like ambiance over the decades.

The food, however, is anything but provincial. As with the best of contemporary Parisian bistrots, head chef Fabrizio Guérrini (formerly of Michelin-starred Agapé) spotlights seasonal ingredients on a menu of small sharing plates, which change monthly.

Fresh Flowers, Produce, and Cold-Press Juices at L’Epicerie Végétale in Paris’ 11ème

HiP Paris L'Epicierie Vegetal flowers

Once a country girl, always a country girl. Or at least it turned out that way for Zoé Kovacs, one of the owners of L’Epicerie Végétale, a new flower and produce market and cold-press juice bar in the 11th arrondissement.

Having made a name for herself as a fashion photographer with clients like Sephora, Zoé and her business partner Guillaume Servet reached a point where life in the fashion fast lane was no longer what they wanted. After spending nearly a year working for a small organic produce store and learning the ins and outs of working directly with independent producers, Zoé and Guillaume opened L’Epicerie Végétale at the end of September. The vision? To make everything as local and seasonal as possible.

The Parisian’s Paris: Fabulous Dining Around Nation

The Parisian's Paris: Best Restaurants, Boutiques, and Bistros around Nation

Le Dalou

Do you remember the film 2 Days in Paris? I imagine if you’re reading this—the Francophile that you are—you are familiar with this movie. The scene in which French actress Julie Delpy narrates all of the arrondissements in Paris she had lived in struck me as grand, not realizing that five years after seeing the film I would be sharing this very narration.

Le Picotin

In the five years I have lived in Paris, I’ve lived in the 15th, the 3rd, the 4th, Oberkampf (twice), stayed in the 12th and the 13th, and even had a stint in Vincennes before settling down in Nation (also the 12th).  When my husband introduced the idea of checking out this residential enclave, especially after having resided in the more popular and bohemian areas, I couldn’t help but wonder if we were still going to be within Paris city limits and if my friendships were going to become long distance.
