August in Paris: What to do When the Parisians Disappear

HiP Paris Blog tells you what to do in Paris when the Parisians disappearNo Entry – Joann Pai

August is always a strange time in Paris. Streets which are usually buzzing with people suddenly take on the deserted appearance of a town in a Western movie; and the queues that normally snake from the most sought-after establishments completely dissipate. The desperate rush to squeeze inside my metro is usually an exercise which resembles the evacuation of the Titanic (except I’m pretty sure the first class passengers had the decency to wear deodorant – which is more than I can say for the armpits you get wedged under on the Line 13). But in August the metro is eerily empty (although while the armpits on the Line 13 are unfortunately remain as sweaty as ever).

Where to Find the Best Brunch in Paris: Our Top Picks for Brunching in the City

HiP Paris Blog rounds up the top brunch spots in ParisLa Fontaine de Belleville

As a member of the opening team at Holybelly, I know my way around eggs, pancakes and bacon. At Holybelly we always focused on seasonal, local, and delicious ingredients. It takes a lot of effort and commitment to work this way, but this is what I expect from the restaurants I work in as well as those I go to on my mornings off. We have a saying in the kitchen that if you can survive the brunch line, you can do anything. At Holybelly, we were among champions.

Café Oberkampf’s Newest Venture: Café Méricourt

HiP Paris Blog checks out Cafe Mericourt, Cafe Oberkampf's brother cafe.

Café Méricourt, Café Oberkampf’s grand frère cafe, has just opened around the corner from the local favorite’s first location.

Café Méricourt is intimate yet light, fitted out with classic blonde timber, green accented window frames, lovely straw lampshades, and gold painted columns for a touch of bling.

When I visited, I enjoyed sitting solo at the bar, where the super friendly staff chatted with me as I waited for my food.

Paris is in full holiday swing, with café overhangs donning festive pine garlands and grand magasin windows showcasing this year’s glitzy displays. Here are some of our favorite events happenings around the city this month:

Funk bassist Thundercat has been particularly present on the radar this year, with spots on albums with Kendrik Lamar and Kamasi Washington and an EP of his own. He’s playing La Bellevilloise tonight and tickets are available here.

The Paris Craft Coffee Revolution Continues with Coffee Spoune and Café Oberkampf

HiP Paris blog. Cafe Oberkampf. Latte made with Coutume coffee.

If this summer in Paris were to be labeled anything, it could certainly be called the season of the craft café. With so many places opening up — Steel, Honor, Ob-La-Di, Broken Biscuits, to name a few — it’s hard to believe that there are any niches left to fill. But somehow, the minds behind the 11th arrondissement’s newest offerings, Coffee Spoune and Café Oberkampf, have managed to differentiate themselves from the pack.
