Among Paris’ hundreds of hotels, there are a select few that break from the mold. They feature living room-style lounges or trendy bars popular with Parisians or rooms decorated by artists or filled with quirky flea market finds. Enjoy a chic home away from home at these ultra-hip boutique hotels in Paris.
With nearly 10 locations in Europe and the US, the Parisian outpost of these trendy “open hotels” attracts travelers and locals alike. Within the sprawling-yet-intimate complex of an 18th-century residence in the coveted Montorgueil district, the hotel has a solid restaurant, courtyard café, hidden bar where guests can mingle with a stylish Parisian crowd (not to mention rooms to fit all budgets).
Tucked away on a small square in the Montorgueil area is this relaxed hotel. Its 12 rooms have each been designed by a different Parisian creative, including fashion designers, photographers, and artists. The results vary wildly from the quirky “Dream” with action-hero figurines and toy cars to the sensual “Ma Nuit” in nighttime tones, vintage mirrors, and star-like lighting. Its bar-restaurant is also popular with locals, so the hotel really has the feel of staying with a friend in Paris—albeit a quirky, stylish one!
Ideally situated between Montorgueil and the Marais, this fashionable venue is also popular with Parisians thanks to its swanky restaurant, sensorial cocktail bar, and rooftop terrace with views all the way up to Montmartre. Created by noted designer Raphael Navot, guest rooms feature a crisp and sober look with carefully selected art prints, contemporary photographs, and design items.
Located within a revamped 19th-century textile factory, this is an excellent base for those looking to immerse themselves in the hip local vibe of Paris’ 11th district. The ground floor has an airy industrial feel with exposed brick walls and ventilation pipes, which are also found in the guest rooms, along with colorful headboards and textiles. For longer stays, there is a more spacious deluxe room and a duplex room with a separate living area.
One of the first contemporary boutique hotels in Paris, Le Pigalle a favorite haunt of the locals of Paris’ hip South Pigalle neighborhood. A vast ground-floor lounge features a huge common table, worn leather sofas, and a DJ spinning at night. And its 40 rooms boast crisp white walls decorated in modern prints, photos, and the occasional flea market find. If you’re traveling with a friend, there are even bunk-bed rooms, a trendy step up from a hostel stay.
After its first location in the 20th district, Mamma Shelter is back in Paris and sticking to its goal of attracting visitors, and Parisians, to lesser-trodden areas of the capital. As with their other hotels, Mama Shelter West has a fun and hip spirit (think ping pong, foosball, and free movies) and a killer rooftop terrace.
If you want a different experience of Paris, and plan to be spending some time wandering the sprawling Paris flea market, then book a room at this funky hotel. Located right next to the Les Puces de Saint-Ouen, eco-friendly and socially conscious MOB aims to be more than a mere hotel. They’re serious about recycling and composting and have an organic restaurant using locally sourced seasonal ingredients, some from their very own garden and beehives. Be sure to check their calendar for an array of cool happenings, from unplugged concerts to pop-up stores.
