Calling All Francophiles: A Spring Editorial Internship with HiP Paris

HiP Paris Blog, Editorial Internship

Ever since my first visit to the City of Light as a child, I knew that I eventually wanted to live there, and my family knew it too, often retelling stories of me leap-frogging over the iconic street posts and disappearing down les petites rues.

Skip forward to October 2015, after spending another two months travelling around Europe, I returned to my hometown, Perth (the most isolated capital city in the world). I always finish my trips in Paris because, well, it’s Paris! A couple of weeks later, back into the routine of my everyday life, the inevitable longing to return kicked in, and so without much planning, I booked a one-way flight and landed at Charles de Gaulle three months later.

I have since returned to Australia and can’t say that my year in Paris was easy. Between studying to improve my French so I felt confident enough to apply for jobs, moving apartments four times, and battling to immerse myself in a foreign social environment that I had only ever really dipped a toe in, I often felt completely overwhelmed. On the flip side, I had an excitement and sense of energy that only comes from living in a cultural mecca like Paris, where every day provides the opportunity to experience and create something new. Plus, not to mention endless supplies of croissants, stinky cheeses on every corner, and super-cheap French wine!

So, when the opportunity arose to work with HiP Paris as the Editorial Assistant, I knew that it would be a catalyst for an even more authentic vie parisienne and jumped at it. Beyond the tasks associated with the inner workings of running a successful blog – sourcing photography, uploading content to the site, and researching related stories – the experience encouraged me to observe deeper, question more, and create more valuable relationships.

As a result, I have been able to share with you some of my own adventures and insights into what adds to the unique cultural fabric that is Paris. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Erica, Editorial Director and Owner of Haven In, and Erin, our HiP Editor, who have both been so encouraging, and enabled me to develop new skills, and branch out of my comfort zone.

Yet all good things must come to an end, and even though I’m sure this won’t be the last you hear from me, it is time to pass this incredible opportunity to the next Paris enthusiast, who will hopefully find it equally as rewarding and exciting.

Think you’re a great fit and ready to hit the ground running? Find more information on the HiP Paris Editorial Intern position here. If interested in applying, simply send a cover letter, CV, and 2-3 samples of editorial work to [email protected]. If you don’t have any published editorial work yet, please send us a list of some of your favorite blogs and/or photography websites that you feel define your personal aesthetic.

If you had told me in September 2014 when I stepped off the plane at Charles de Gaulle airport that I would still be here over a year later, I probably would have told you that you were crazy. And yet, here I am, finishing up my internship with HiP Paris and head over heels in love with the City of Light.

After a year as an au pair, I put my world travel plans on hold to stay in Paris, and along the way found the HiP Paris internship. I was thrilled when they asked me to join the team, an opportunity to dig even deeper into the city I already loved. My main duties consisted of mostly back-end work: prepping blog posts, sourcing photos, and finding the perfect related links to interest our readers, among other things. As a blogger myself, I learned so much about how a successful blog really works, all of the behind-the-scenes aspects involved, and things I will definitely use going forward.

A summer internship in Paris with HiP Paris Blog

Last August, with a passport and plane ticket in hand, I said goodbye to my family and stepped onto an airplane headed to Paris. For the next year, I would learn a great deal through experiencing French culture firsthand and through my editorial internship with HiP Paris.

The city of Paris is famous the world over for its food, wine, art, and culture, and there are always new restaurants opening, new artists and musicians to discover. As the HiP Paris intern, I get to be the eyes and ears of the city, discovering up-and-coming events and attending press cocktails and openings.

Each day, I checked the blog post schedule and uploaded text and images onto the site. Editing and resizing photos, searching for related articles to link to, and tracking down information like restaurant addresses and phone numbers were the main parts of my job, but I also loved branching out as the internship progressed, particularly enjoying reading and commenting on other Paris food and fashion blogs on behalf of HiP Paris.

I have a nice camera and was often sent on photo excursions to shoot images for upcoming blog posts. Thanks to HiP, my weekends were spent wandering the antique flea markets at St. Ouen or enjoying coffee and dessert at Parismost historic café, Le Procope, all with my camera in hand.

In addition to the blog upkeep, Ive had the time to research and write my own content. As a food-lover, Ill admit that most of my posts have been about restaurants or food events. In writing these articles, I discovered favorite Korean restaurants like Hero and Ibaji, and made friends in Parisexciting gastronomy scene.

I was lucky enough to be in Paris during the time that Erin, HiP Paris Editor, was visiting for work. I got to know her over coffee at Folks & Sparrows and amazing pancakes at Holybelly. Over the next few months, she would take me out to birthday cocktails and to lunch as a parting present before she flew back to New York. For me, the best part of being the HiP intern is working with Erica, HiP Paris Editorial Director and Owner of Haven in Paris, and Erin. Ive never worked for bosses that have been as fun-loving and generous.

With a month left in Paris, Im busy making memories, madly shooting photos of every flowering tree along the banks of the Seine, and enjoying my work. Its been my best and favorite internship experience so far and Im thankful for the opportunities that HiP has given me.
