Paris has been dealt an unfortunate hand recently, from nationwide strikes to the Seine flooding its banks. However, the city is still very much alive and kicking off June with some wonderful events.

Champs-Elysees Film Festival/Solidays

Champs-Elysees Film Festival & Solidays

The Fort d’Aubervilliers, a former military fortication that was abandoned in the 70s, is opening to the public for a presentation of the work of more than 40 urban artists for the In Situ Art Festival. Pieces include the transformation of 15 trucks and 10 vans stationed within the fort, which is set to be demolished this fall; all the more reason to check out this festival, which is on view until July 14.

Villette Sonique

Villette Sonique

Festival Onze Bouge, 18 years and running, returns this year to Paris’s 11eme for “Eleven Movement” from May 31 – June 7. The festival features theater, music, dance, and street art performances around the arrondissement, and all free of charge. Take a peek at the schedule for more details.

Festival Onze Bouge

Baptiste Morin

From June 2 – 8 the Parc de la Villette plays host to Villette Sonique, this summer’s first major music festival.  This year’s lineup brings a great variety of talents, from sets by Four Tet, Nils Frahm and Jagwar Ma. Not to mention Saturday and Sunday afternoons also promise free shows, which you should clearly not miss.

June Events in Paris: Frenchie Does To-Go, Summer Music Festivals, and More

Music
One of the welcome harbingers of summer has to be the season’s music festival circuit. After a long winter and a dreary, cold spring, all anyone really wants to do is pass the days outdoors. Add some great music and dancing, and everyone feels a little better. There is truly something for everyone as far as summer concerts go, but a few of my favorites this month include the Paris Jazz Festival (June 8 – 28), Fete de la Musique (June 21), and Solidays (June 28 – 30). Sounds will vary from laid-back jazz to popular names like Parov Stelar, The Hives, and Django Django, to name just a few.

Food
Last month pop shop Merci opened its online boutique, and this month Frenchie intends to serve up a to-go menu… I am loving this democratization of Parisian favorites. Frenchie has been touted by foodies and taste makers as one of the top Parisian restaurants over the past few years, and I can only imagine their to-go dishes, rumored to include casual fare like bacon-sprinkled doughnuts, fish and chips, and a Pastrami Reuben made with house-cured meat, will be some of the best in the city as well.

June Events in Paris: Our Top Picks

Weekend Voyages

Fête de la Musique
June 21 brings the Fete de la Musique back for its 31st year. This year the festival celebrates 50 years of pop, and with a full lineup of gratuit concerts, there is certainly something for every taste.

Musique

June 5: Magnificat: Polychoral music at Notre-Dame de Paris. An extraordinary opportunity to enjoy a concert in one of the world’s most famous cathedrals. This show celebrates the works of famed composers Michael Praetorius and Giovanni Gabrieli, who drastically shaped the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music in Europe.

Chairlift (by Tom Hines)

June 6: Brooklyn synth pop duo Chairlift is playing at La Gaîté lyrique. If ethereal harmonies (and the Apple ad featuring their 2008 “Bruises”) is your thing, this is your show. Continue Reading »
