April Events in Paris: Boot Cafe, Grilled Cheese, Priceless Soupers at Bones, and More!

April Events, HiP Paris Blog, Photo by Grilled Cheese Factory

Grilled Cheese Factory

Another new Parisian resto is borrowing a stateside favorite; The Grilled Cheese Factory has opened at 9 rue Jacques Coeur and is serving up their versions of the classic. They’ve got the standard grilled cheese on offer, of course, as well as some more experimental incarnations (pastrami, mac & cheese, smoked salmon…) Sure, a croque monsieur is delicious, but who doesn’t love a good old grilled cheese with a bowl of steaming tomato soup once in a while?

9 rue Jacques Cœur, 75004 Paris. Tel: +33 (0)1 77 10 67 83. Métro: Bastille.

Bones & Boot Cafe

Just a quick walk from The Grilled Cheese Factory, the Marais has another neighborhood newcomer: Boot Café. This latest addition to Paris’s burgeoning coffee scene is serving up Belleville Brûlerie coffee and Emperor Norton sweets, to stay (if you can get one of the few tables in the tiny shop) or to go.

19 Rue du Pont aux Choux, 75003 Paris. Tel: +33 (0)6 26 41 10 66. Métro: Saint-Sébastien Froissart.

February in Paris: Café Pinson 2, Café Kitsuné, Hai Kai, Festival Circulation(s) and More

February Events, HiP Paris Blog, Cafe Pinson

Café Pinson

The popular Café Pinson has expanded beyond its first location in the 3rd and opened up shop on rue du Faubourg Poissonniere in the 10th. The vibe is a touch retro-meets-nautical, and the menu is stacked with organic, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, fresh pressed juices, bio wines, and Coutume coffees.

Festival Circulation(s) (Marlous van der Sloot)

Another hyped café opened up just a few weeks ago and it too is offering up healthy eating and drinking options, conveniently located in the 1st. Brought to us by famed fashion/music label Maison Kitsuné, the new (and, as you can imagine, quite hip) Café Kitsuné is serving Brazilian coffee, fresh juices from Bob’s juice bar, and gluten-free pastries from NOGLU.

A new restaurant has popped up along the Canal St Martin and we cannot wait to give it a taste. Haï Kaï, under chef Amélie Darvas (formerly of the Meurice and L’Ami Jean, to name a few), is presenting a wonderfully priced menu that can be enjoyed at hours unheard of in Paris.

Fête du Graphisme

The annual winter soldes have arrived in Paris and will be running until February 11th. Undeniably one of the most exciting times of year for fashion fiends in Paris, les soldes are the perfect time to pick up casual pieces at a great discount or splurge on a designer classic you’ve been eyeing.

Make a day of it and head to the grands magasins by Opera or some chic boutiques in St Germain… Or, even better, a mix of both.

There’s a new casual dining option on rue Saint Maur in the 11th. Balls Restaurant (yes, Balls) just opened its doors and is reminiscent of The Meatball Shop in New York. Featuring meatballs made of various proteins (and a veggie option, of course), sides, and sauces, this is the perfect low-key spot for quick lunch or dinner, and is open Tuesday – Saturday. Aff (formerly Odd Bod) & abac077

Whether you’re brimming with holiday cheer and eat up the cheesiness that the holidays can bring or looking for hip events that have absolutely nothing to do with Noel, we’ve got you covered, with everything from a graffiti installation in a new art space in an old car garage to ice skating in front of the Hotel de Ville.

La Manufacture 111 recently opened on rue des Pyrenees in the 20th and is playing host to 1984, the well-known Paris graffiti collective, for an ongoing residency. The three-story former car garage will officially open in April 2014, but this pre-opening is on view until December 22.

Trax Magazine, dedicated to all things electronic music, is opening Club Trax, a pop-up club for just three weekends this month. Most of the details of each event have been kept under wraps, but there are two more soirees left, on December 13 and December 20. Keep up with the details here and here.

Parisian photographer Christophe Jacrot is known for focusing on the beauty that can exist in a city when unpleasant weather strikes, often rain and snow. Though this interest began in Paris, it quickly moved to other metropolises like Hong Kong, New York, London. Continue Reading »

November Events in Paris: Le Clan des Madones, Coutume Lab, Paris Photo, and more

HiP Paris Blog, freakgirl, Cupcake Camp, November Events

Cupcake Camp (freakgirl & Cupcake Camp)

Leave it to Le Fooding to get 13 of the best names in the food and wine industry cooking together in one room. Mark your calendars, November 15 – 17 are my favorite two days this month. With Le Clan des Madones, Le Fooding is bringing together a group of incredible female chefs in a parking-garage-turned-pop-up-restaurant and giving them carte blanche to cook two services for seatings of 50 each evening.

To die for! Just a few of the participants include Camille Fourmon of La Buvette de Camille, Laura Vidal of Frenchie, Adeline Grattard of Yam’Tcha… You get the idea. The first round of tickets sold out quickly (no surprise there), but another ticket release is set for November 12. Oh and did we mention part of the proceeds go to the charity Les Enfants du Congo-Béthanie?

Coutume Café, one of our favorite spots for a delicious coffee in Paris, has just launched Coutume Lab. They’ll be doing coffee research and offering tastings, and we’ll be sure to share any events they host. In the meantime, head over to their Facebook page for a preview. Continue Reading »

September 14: It’s baaack. Paris’s Technoparade returns on September 14th for its 15th anniversary and promises its best celebration of electronic music yet. Find your favorite DJ’s float and follow it throughout the streets, and to get yourself in the mood beforehand, check out this year’s Technoparade Playlist on 22tracks.

September 17 – November 17: Each fall the Musee du Quai Branly presents Photoquai, an exhibition showcasing photography from around our world. This year’s 4th biennial places its focus on the person, rather than a geography or point in time. The featured photos’ humanistic qualities truly bring the exhibition to life, and make it that much more touching. Continue Reading »

August Events in Paris: A New Resto from Le Baron Folks, Summer Festivals, and more!

HiP Paris Blog, Festival Silhouette, Festival Classique au Vert, August Events

Festival SilhouetteFestival Classique au Vert

Festivals
The summer festival set is coming to a close this month, but fear not, we’re going out with a bang. Cinema au Clair de Lune began last week, but continues until the 11th with a film screening each night, each in a different outdoor venue.

HiP Paris Blog, Les Berges, August Events

Berges de Seine

And Festival Classique au Vert, a seven-week-long celebration of classical music from around the world, just kicked off at the Parc Floral and continues until September 15th. You’ll get your traditional concertos and preludes, but some performances offer funkier twists, from a group of Japanese Taiko players to New York style Hip Hop.

HiP Paris Blog, Les Berges, August Events

Berges de Seine

One of my personal favorites comes towards the end of the month with Rock en Seine from August 23 – 25, a three-day concert series boasting popular names that have graced my playlists over the past few months, like Alt-J, Kendrick Lamar, and Daughter, to name just a few. And Festival Silhouette, also beginning at the end of the month, offers film screening and concerts in the Parc de la Butte du Chapeau Rouge. Continue Reading »

June Events in Paris: Frenchie Does To-Go, Summer Music Festivals, and More

HiP Paris Blog, Rock en Seine, ©Matt Wignall, June Events

Valerie June (©Matt Wignall)

Music
One of the welcome harbingers of summer has to be the season’s music festival circuit. After a long winter and a dreary, cold spring, all anyone really wants to do is pass the days outdoors. Add some great music and dancing, and everyone feels a little better. There is truly something for everyone as far as summer concerts go, but a few of my favorites this month include the Paris Jazz Festival (June 8 – 28), Fete de la Musique (June 21), and Solidays (June 28 – 30). Sounds will vary from laid-back jazz to popular names like Parov Stelar, The Hives, and Django Django, to name just a few.

Food
Last month pop shop Merci opened its online boutique, and this month Frenchie intends to serve up a to-go menu… I am loving this democratization of Parisian favorites. Frenchie has been touted by foodies and taste makers as one of the top Parisian restaurants over the past few years, and I can only imagine their to-go dishes, rumored to include casual fare like bacon-sprinkled doughnuts, fish and chips, and a Pastrami Reuben made with house-cured meat, will be some of the best in the city as well.

April Events in Paris: Lobster Rolls, Paris PopUp Brunch, Keith Haring and More

Food

Lobster rolls in Paris? Mais oui! Le Lobster Bar is opening up just in time for warm weather. The only thing that could compete with a lobster roll and a cold beer on a hot summer day might just be fresh tortillas and guacamole… And that’s also happening with Mil Amores Tortilleria, with a little help from the chef at Candelaria. Perfect timing.

Paris Pop-Up

Mark your agendas: the next Paris PopUp dinner, courtesy of Frenchie’s Laura Vidal and Harry Cummins, will take place on/around May 19, with tickets going on sale April 19. This installment will be a convivial brunch/lunch setup, with mixologists on hand, sweet music, and possibly a surprise appearance from across the channel. Can’t wait! Email theparispopup@gmail.com starting April 19 to score a spot.

March Events in Paris: Haute Couture, Chagall, Orchids and More!

HiP Paris Blog, DG Jones, francki.photo, March Events in Paris

Art

Through July 21: A Chagall exhibition opened at the Musée de Luxembourg last week, the first of the artist’s in France in years. The show, Entre Guerre et Paix (Between War and Peace), focuses on the several wars the artist lived through and the various countries in which he experienced these periods of turmoil. A must-see, for sure.

Until May 20: Soleil Froid (Cold Sun) also opened last week at the Palais de Tokyo, the perfect locale for such a show. The exhibition features pieces by a slew of artists working in varied media that, when experienced together, result in a sort of alternate world. Using vintage cars, concrete human forms, light shows and other abstractions, visitors will recognize a hint of the world we understand in this amalgam of unknown. The show is open particularly late – until midnight – making this one of my top March-weekend-nighttime to-dos.

The haute couture exhibition at Hotel de Ville (© musée Galliera, Ville de Paris)

Until July 6: The world of French haute couture is the kind of club that most only preview through magazines, film, television or literature. The show that opened at the Hotel de Ville this week, however, invites novices and specialists alike to delve into the world of haute couture design through photos and statement garments created by some of the most renowned classic designers.
