The annual winter soldes have arrived in Paris and will be running until February 11th. Undeniably one of the most exciting times of year for fashion fiends in Paris, les soldes are the perfect time to pick up casual pieces at a great discount or splurge on a designer classic you’ve been eyeing.

Make a day of it and head to the grands magasins by Opera or some chic boutiques in St Germain… Or, even better, a mix of both.

There’s a new casual dining option on rue Saint Maur in the 11th. Balls Restaurant (yes, Balls) just opened its doors and is reminiscent of The Meatball Shop in New York. Featuring meatballs made of various proteins (and a veggie option, of course), sides, and sauces, this is the perfect low-key spot for quick lunch or dinner, and is open Tuesday – Saturday. Until July 30 – Les Soldes: It’s that time of year again. The five-week summer shopping madness has begun; shops all over our favorite city are showing off their discounts, beckoning shoppers inside. Given the less-than-dreamy spring Paris just had, bargains should be even more irresistible than usual.
![Days off]()
July 1- 9: There are a whole slew of concerts to experience this summer, and music festivals make this a far simpler undertaking (not to mention a bit easier on our wallets). One of my favorites for this month is Days Off. Events are selling out, but you can still catch the likes of Beck, Lou Doillon and James Blake if you jump on those tickets quickly.

July 6: The Paris Wine Company, a venture started by Joshua Adler formerly of Spring, is hosting its launch party at Verjus, one of our favorite restaurants. You can reserve a picnic lunch to enjoy from 12-2pm, and then stick around for free (yes, free!) tastings from 4-6pm. Continue Reading »

Salon de la Lingerie
Fashion
January 9 – February 12: Winter Soldes: Making good on New Year’s resolutions is in full-force at this time of the year and perhaps a wardrobe update is on your list? Even if it isn’t, tackling the winter soldes is a must! These nationwide sales happen only twice each year – in the winter and summer – so brace yourself for the crowds and hit your favorite shops during these few weeks!
January 19-21: Salon de la Lingerie at the Porte de Versailles: Paris is a city of many names, and for me it’s always been the queen of beautiful lingerie; decorative, carefully-crafted lace and silk wares that are true investment pieces. For a few days this month, Paris will formally become the Capital of Lingerie with a giant exposition at the Porte de Versailles entirely dedicated to beautiful under-garments. And guys needn’t be shy, menswear is au rendez-vous as well.

Art
Through January 20: Impressionism and Fashion at the Musee d’Orsay: I had never really thought of the Impressionists as illustrators of modern fashion, but this exhibition at the Musee d’Orsay has changed by mind. Pieces by the greats – Monet, Degas, Renoir, etc. – are shown to highlight the fashion and beauty trends that were popular during their day. Continue Reading »

Chez Aline: Delphine Zampetti, former chef at Le Verre Volé, recently opened this new resto. Don’t let the “chevaline” sign deter you, Chez Aline is a great spot for an affordable and simply delicious lunch.
Wanderlust: Everything (okay, almost everything) we could want in a space: outdoor terrace, cinema, restaurant, bar, club and even yoga. This hip new spot in the 13th has something for every mood. Continue Reading »

Casual shoppers, beware. The French sales are just around the corner and many a French fashionista is getting ready to pounce on items she has secretly coveted all Fall. In all honesty, though, the soldes are often the one moment of fashion folly many Parisiennes allow themselves. For decades, one market has proven remarkably resistant to passing trends: Paris. Despite jumping at the occasional fad (the Balmain-inspired shoulder pad, the hardware-adorned gladiator sandal), Parisian shoppers — both young and old — follow certain cardinal rules in their shopping habits, year-in and year-out.
The key to this eternal French chic may lie in a natural sense of restraint and discernment. In considering her past wardrobe choices, a French woman is less inclined to wonder, “What was I thinking?” because (most likely) it’s what she’s still thinking: invest in high-quality staples and err on the side of understated elegance.

July 2, 2010 by La Mom - An American Mom in Paris
La Mom in Paris is a hilarious blog about an American mom living a très Parisian life in the city of lights. From encounters with French frat boys (yes, apparently they do exist) to profiling the Parisian Jet Set Dog, her witty anecdotes about her expat circle of friends truly make us feel as if we were there with her. Here, she gives us a fantastic breakdown of how to navigate the summer sales, Parisienne-style!
Ladies and gentlemen, get your running shoes out and your boxing gloves on.
C’est les soldes!
Wednesday marked the beginning of the fabled twice-annual deep-discount French sales.
Fabled, you might ask? Let’s just say that even Cendrillon can find a dress or two to go with those glass stilettos as prices fall to rock bottom over the 5-week sales period.
And why the boxing gloves? If it’s anything like last year’s Zadig & Voltaire markdowns, you’ll need ‘em. Normally prim and proper 16th arrondissement demoiselles morphed into banshees as they duked it out over cashmere sweaters – even resorted to slugging each other with their Hermès Birkin bags to get at the last ELVIS-logo pullover.
Trust me, those sapphire-and-diamond rings can do some damage. Better come with a game plan.
Here are La Mom’s tips for making the most of the summer soldes: Continue Reading »
