It is officially la rentrée and Paris is abuzz. September brings Parisians back from their month-long holidays, revived and ready to welcome fall (at least for a few weeks). Here are some of our favorite events around the city this month.

This week kicked off the festival set with Jazz at la Villette (until September 14) and the Festival d’Automne (until December 30), and we continue with the Fête de l’Humanité next weekend (September 12 – 14). Each features concerts, various live performances, and with the weather recently turning to sunny and moderate, there’s really no better way to spend the upcoming week(s).

Sneakers are having a fashionable moment, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The shift from donning those uncomfortable heels to rocking long-wearing sneakers is certainly welcomed, and this weekend brings us an event dedicated to this footwear itself. Sneakerness runs from September 6-7 at Centquatre, so read more about the festivities here and be sure to pick up a new pair of kicks.

Concerts continue with Sinkane at New Morning on September 10 and the annual Techno Parade on the 13, with floats marching from Place de la Nation to Place de la République from 12h-19h. If you’re not completely beat after Techno Parade, be sure to catch the infamous Ms. Lauryn Hill at le Zénith that night.

Park(ing) Day is a global event occurring on September 19, and Paris will be taking part. The event invites artists and activists (and everyone in between) to transform public parking spaces into temporary eco-focused art pieces, so be sure to peruse the city to peep the pop-ups; they won’t be around for too long.

On September 20-21, les Journées Européennes du Patrimoine returns for its 31st year of celebrating Paris’ heritage. Over 16,000 monuments are opening across France, and there are curated itineraries for various Paris walks, based on your interests.

On September 24, the Pompidou opens a Duchamp exhibition. One of the most iconic modern artists of the 20th century, Duchamp is perhaps most commonly associated with his Dadaist readymades, like Fountain, but this exhibition will feature strictly the paintings of the man who many claimed killed painting with his shift in medium.

Expat photographer Richard Nahem of I Prefer Paris opens an exhibition with Meredith Mullins this month at Le 102 Gallery. In Search of the Unusual: Paris & Beyond showcases both color and black & white photographs that explore the lesser-seen side of Paris and elsewhere. The vernissage will be held on September 26 and the show runs from September 26 – October 2.

Laura Vidal and Harry Cummins of the ever-popular Paris Popup are returning to Paris after nearly a year of touring the world, and they’re putting on Les Sept Soirées Ensembles, a gastronomic and cultural event from September 27 – October 3 at Le Pop-up du Label in the 12ème.

The dinners will feature seasonal dishes, wines by the glass (including pours from some magnums of old Burgundy – a real treat), and bands/DJs will take over the concert space below the resto afterwards. Reservations can be made on Paris Popup’s Facebook Page.

  2. Hi Erin,
Thanks for these great tips! I’m going to Paris for the second week in October and am wondering if you know of similar events in the city then? I’d really like to go to any concerts, art fairs, runs or any other social gatherings! Thank you for your insights,
