In the height of summer, visitors yearn for respite and relaxation from the hustle and bustle of the city. Few places are more popular than Mediterranean seaside and hidden hilltop villages of Provence. Yet increasingly with rising temperatures and bigger crowds, the shoulder seasons have become more popular. The weather is still nice but not oppressively hot. Crowds have dispersed. Reservations are easier to come by. Best of all, prices drop. Whether you are planning to visit the South of France in peak season, or during the less busy months, here are some of the most exciting luxury hotels to have opened in the South of France in recent seasons.
Mondrian, Cannes
Mondrian has launched its inaugural French hotel in Cannes, transforming the historic Grand Hotel on La Croisette. This stylish Californian lifestyle brand is comprised of a 75-room property featuring an idyllic garden terrace and the tallest building in Cannes. Guests can savor stunning sea views, especially from the 11th floor. This stylish hotel also has a private beach club, a gym, and Mr. Nakamoto restaurant, where seafood is delicately infused with Japanese flavors and American influences.
Anantara Plaza, Nice
Last summer marked the grand reopening of the Anantara Plaza, a beautifully renovated building dating back to 1848. This Thai-based brand’s first venture in France includes market tours, cooking classes, and a variety of local excursions and workshops. The rooftop restaurant, Seen, offers stunning views of the Albert the First Gardens and the Mediterranean, drawing both locals and tourists. Guests can also indulge in afternoon tea at Les Colonnades, unwind at the Anantara Spa, and relax in one of the 151 luxurious rooms.
Le Carlton, Cannes
After years of extensive renovations, including a two-year closure, Le Carlton, Cannes has reopened to great acclaim. This iconic luxury hotel, the first of its kind in Cannes, has hosted movie stars and presidents. The restoration, led by interior designer Tristan Auer, involved 750 skilled craftsmen who preserved the Art Deco and Belle Epoque origins while introducing refined modern touches. The hotel features new wings, an infinity pool, expansive terraces, luxurious rooms, a spa, fitness complexes, and three restaurants offering exquisite Mediterranean cuisine. A tea lounge and bar are also available to quench your thirst.
La Ferme HI Bride, Villelaure Provence
This eco-friendly guest house provides a serene alternative to the more touristy parts of the Luberon. Surrounded by olive trees, forests, and vineyards, the highlight of this property is its distinctive décor by interior designer Matali Crasset, featuring murals, vibrant colors, and unique furniture. Guests can participate in cooking classes and musical events and start their day with an organic farm-to-table breakfast. While there is no on-site restaurant, the nearby village of Ansouis offers three excellent dining options, including a Michelin-starred restaurant, with additional choices in Lourmarin, Bonnieux, and Menerbes. La Ferme HI Bride is perfect for a luxurious yet understated stay.
Domaine de Chalamon, Provence
Nestled among cypress trees, this 16th-century building has been meticulously renovated to the highest standards. The estate’s beautiful, meandering gardens are a standout feature, complemented by a heated pool and tennis court. This Domaines de Fontenille hotel offers 20 luxury rooms and suites set on nearly 20 hectares, appealing to nature lovers seeking tranquility and elegance.
Maybourne Riviera, Cote d’Azur
The Maybourne Riviera, brought to you by the Maybourne Hotel Group (the team behind Claridge’s London), is a strikingly modern property with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and restored gardens. Designed by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, the hotel features indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a private beach club, and exceptional dining options. Culinary delights are provided by Mauro Colagreco of the three-Michelin star restaurant Mirazur, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and Japanese chef Hiroyuki Sato, making the hotel a destination in its own right.
