Paris’ tourist-heavy areas like the Marais, 6th and 7th arrondissements, Jardins des Tuileries, and Place de la Concorde are undeniably some of the most picturesque urban landscapes in the world. But the City of Light has so many faces. It’s also fun to explore places where many Parisians actually live and frequent for a glimpse of true Parisian life. One such neighborhood is Strasbourg-Saint-Denis in the 10th arrondissement.
One of my favorite walks in Paris is wandering from the Marais, through the grandeur of the Porte Saint-Denis, and finally onto the gritty, charming, rambunctious Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis for a browse through this authentic, vibrant community. Here, you can enjoy the boisterous fruit and veg vendors, bustling Middle Eastern and Asian grocers, traditionally French fromageries, hipster cafés, and more. It’s a great slice of everyday Parisian life. It is also one of the best places to eat. Here are a few of our favorite spots to grab a bite while exploring this colorful area:
Le Daily Syrien
This unassuming, affordable hole-in-the wall offers great Middle Eastern food. Some of the best falafels, hummus, moutabal, and tabouli in town. Plus, shawarma, kibbeh, and more can be sampled here. There is a roomier location with a broader menu just around the corner on Rue des Petites-Écuries, and the third outpost, further up Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, is completely veggie (opened up in a former butcher!)
Le 52
This neo-brasserie opened in 2014, headed by Charles Compagnon (Le Richer and l’Office). Its changing menu offers market-driven dishes at reasonable prices. Here you can find healthy, reasonably priced fare to enjoy in the restaurant’s clean, modern decor. No reservations are taken, and the restaurant is open at all times of the day, for all occasions—whether an impromptu breakfast, business lunch, or date night.
Juhlès
This outpost of the mini chain is one of the best épiceries around. On display are outstanding wines, spirits, cheeses, pastries, breads, and other artisanal delicacies. It’s a great place to peruse whether you’re holding a dinner party, want to grab a quick bite to eat, or source foodie souvenirs for gifts.
Floderer
This classic Brasserie is nestled in the beautifully paved courtyard that is the Cour des Petites-Écuries. Enjoy classic Alsatian specialties in Belle-Époque surroundings. Seafood platters, sauerkraut, and rum baba are amongst the highlights, as well as good value prix fixe menus.
5 Pailles
This buzzy, hospitable café is a great place for coffee lovers, serving roasts from various European producers including Lomi, Shokunin, Bonanza, La Cabra, and more. The veggie-forward all-day brunch includes granola, pancakes, toasts, eggs, sandwiches, salads, and excellent pastries. The great ambiance means it’s a place where you’ll want to linger.
Urfa Dürüm
For just a few euros, you can have one of the best deals in town: fresh Kurdish sandwiches filled with a choice of different meats and vegetables like arugula, onions, parsley, lettuce, and lemon. Served without sauce, fries, or other accoutrements – simple food, done well.
PNY
This popular burger spot offers the best quality beef from Brittany, ethically farmed to the highest standards of welfare and breeding, matured to perfection. Homesick expats can satisfy their burger cravings here, where you’ll find hearty, iconic American-style burgers with all the fixings: fully loaded burgers, onion rings, fries, jalapeno poppers, buttermilk fried chicken, Beyond Beef, milkshakes, and more.
