Finally a neigborhood bistro in Montmartre! I can now stumble down my 5 flights of stairs and walk around the corner and experience Paris bistro dining at its best. Le Miroir serving crusty bread, fresh fish, meat and produce is a wonderful spot for a long lunch or a charming dinner. I enjoy their authentic French dishes with a twist, homemade desserts, friendly service and daily specials. Tucked into a small side street in Montmartre, the restaurant’s simple decor and cozy ambiance make for an ideal stop for a a meal in the heart of one of the best neighborhoods in Paris. Le Miroir aims to please and pleased I most certainly was.

What are you doing for New Year’s Eve? This recurring question inevitably divides the population into two camps: those who want to hit the streets and party ‘til the break of dawn, and those who would prefer to hibernate at home until the mayhem subsides. Happily, there are plenty of options for both the revelers and the hibernators (and for those who fall somewhere in between). If you’re lucky enough to be ringing in 2010 in Paris, we have some ideas for you! Continue Reading »

This weekend, HiP friend and jeweler Beatrice Knoch is participating in “Portes Ouvertes” in Montmartre. This is a great opportunity to stop by her atelier (work and living space) to see her unique jewelry and to meet the woman behind the designs! German-born but Paris-based for the past 9 years, Beatrice sat down with HIP to discuss her career as a jewelry designer and the things she loves about life in Paris and Montmartre.

HiP: Have you always wanted to be a jewelry designer?
BK: No, at first I wanted to practice medicine. I studied Latin, worked in a hospital, etc.
HiP: What did you study?
BK: In the end, I did Islamic Studies for two years—Turkish and Arabic and all that—at Freiburg in Germany.
HiP: When did you come to France, and where in Germany are you from?
BK: It wasn’t until I began my career as a jewelry designer. I did my studies in Germany, in Pforzheim, on the edge of the Black Forest, where I grew up.

Uninspired by the usual Monoprix, Franprix, ED, and Carrefour supermarkets in Montmartre, none of which thrill me or encourage me to buy much of anything (I prefer the small market shops on rue des Abbesses and Lepic), I was intrigued to see a new supermarket, Le Marché des Gastronomes, open its doors right across from my very own metro, Pigalle.
As soon as possible I headed on over. Continue Reading »

We all know that France produces its fair share of wine, but did you know that Montmartre has its own wine-producing tradition? In addition to being the home of Paris’ only functioning vineyard, it is also home to the Fête des Vendanges, an annual wine festival that celebrates local products and culture. This year’s festival kicked off on Wednesday and runs through Sunday the 11th, featuring musical and theatrical performances, fireworks, and plenty of wines and foods from France and neighboring countries. Guest Blogger Nichole Robertson (of Little Brown Pen fame) discovers one of our favorite bakeries in Montmartre. Make sure to come early to snag one of the outside tables, and enjoy Paris people watching at its best.
On Saturday, we braved the Amelie obsessed tourists on Rue de Abbesses in Montmartre to visit Coquelicot–a sweet little bakery recommended by Clotilde Dusoulier of Chocolate and Zucchini. I adore Clotilde’s blog and books, and her Paris picks never let me down. She raved about the baguettes at Coquelicot, and her blessing coupled with a glimpse of their charming website, was all we needed to pen a visit into our schedule. Continue Reading »
