Les journées européennes du patrimoine (or European Heritage Days) is one of the biggest events of the year in France and its coming up soon: The 36th edition will be held on the weekend of the September 21-22.
Les journées européennes du patrimoine is like a big open house. For one weekend only, visitors are invited to go behind the scenes and discover iconic historical and cultural sites and monuments that are not usually open to the public. The program features over 17,000 sites with nearly 26,000 events all over France.
The theme for the 2019 edition is Arts and Entertainment. Sites include museums, theaters, cinemas, stadiums, and more—both old and new. Participating venues host guided tours, workshops, performances, and many other activities (often for free).
There is one exhibition in particular that’s a must-see this year: Revoir Notre-Dame, which will be held at the Palais Royal. The exhibition will feature the original elements from the spire and roof that survived the tragic April 15 fire: the rooster, two bronze statues representing the Evangelists, and the bust of architect Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc, which were removed just two days before the fire for restoration. These will be accompanied by archival documents, surveys, and photographs.
