Like the hotel scene in Paris, the French Alps are a flurry of activity this season. With the Alpine Ski Championships taking place in February and travel roaring back to its pre-pandemic self, there is no better time than now to re-discover the glorious, luxurious French mountainside. Here are our picks for where to stay in the French Alps this season.

L’Alpaga, Megève

The mix of traditional French chalets with a moody, modern vibe makes L’Alpaga in Megève a fashionable choice for your ski vacation. The light filled balconies and rooms with stunning views will brighten up your stay, especially when your surroundings include Val d’Arly and Mont Blanc. L’Alpaga has 22 rooms including six, three-story chalets sleeping up to twelve people and five apartments that can sleep six. It offers apartments, hotel rooms and chalets with all the amenities of a luxury hotel including a concierge and two restaurants.

La Table de l’Alpaga offers the best of fine dining. Le Bistro de l’Alpaga is for more casual fare. The five-star spa ensures the utmost pampering including various treatments, indoor baths, and an outdoor sauna and Scandinavian bath with views of Mont Blanc.

Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois, A Four Seasons Hotel, Megève

This is the place to come for the homeyness of old-school chalets and the glitz of nearby St. Moritz. One of the many highlights of Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois is its location, just over 1500 feet from the pistes of Mont d’Arbois and the Golf Club. It is also mere minutes from the center of Megève. The vibe is cozy warm fires, eclectic art, and valley and mountain views. On the lower floor there is a Bamford spa complete with a sauna, hammam and hot tub. For fitness enthusiasts there is a gym, a heated indoor/outdoor pool and even an ice rink. For kids there is a children’s room which opens during the French school holidays in both summer and winter.

Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois

Foodies will delight because dining options abound. La Table de Noémi specializes in Savoyard products and comfort food. La Dame de Pic – Le 1920 is the celebrated restaurant from one of the world’s most famous Michelin starred chefs Anne-Sophie Pic, combining local produce with innovative cuisine. If you’re in search of cleaner and lighter flavors, Kaito is the most renowned Japanese restaurant in Megève, where classic cuisine from the East combines with Alpine produce. The wine cellar, Bar Edmond, Bar Mont d’Arbois and in-room dining round out your gastronomic selections.

Located just a stone’s throw from the Mont d’Arbois ski lift, the resort has the pleasure of being one of the sunniest in France. This is the place to come for the impeccable service of a Four Seasons Hotel combined with the independence of a chalet.

M Lodge, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville

Opulence and elegance define this new hotel located in the three valleys. It has immediate access to the slopes and integrates the personality and warmth of a boutique hotel with natural surroundings. There are 25 rooms and suites. Each has stunning views of the mountains and valleys. Pamper your body at the Spa du M Lodge where you can have a massage, work out in the gym or take a swim in the 16 meter long swimming pool. There are also two private chalets. For the ultimate pampering, they come complete with a chef, butler and driver. The Table du M Lodge restaurant is the center of the hotel. Its warm decor (soft carpets, comfortable chairs and atmospheric lighting) make for a convivial place to enjoy a gastronomic experience, curated by chef Clément Hericotte.

Ultima Courchevel Belvédère, Courchevel

Ski-out straight onto the Belvédère slopes from your private, five-star accommodation. Personal chefs, butlers and chauffeurs are there for spur of the moment requests. Each residence at this ultra-luxurious resort has four or five bedrooms, accommodating eight to ten adults. There are two world-class spas for post-ski massages, saunas, hammams, fitness rooms or a refreshing dip in the heated outdoor pools and jacuzzi. A grand lobby, gourmet restaurant for fine dining, lavish bar for cocktails and comfy rooms offer privacy and a peaceful setting. 

Antarès, Méribel

The Vallat group, specialists in high-end property, oversaw the opening of this resort, combining the conveniences of a private apartment with the ease of hotel service. Consisting of 23 apartments in three chalets, this resort has made well-being a corner stone. Its 800 square meter spa has the most up-to-date medical grade wellness equipment to help rejuvenate and restore. Swim in the 25 meter long pool from where you can see the mountains and forest in cinemascope. There is a salt cave, multi-temperature pods, sauna, hammam, ice fountain, private sleep pods, aesthetic clinic, tea lounge, cryo-suite, along with facial and body treatments and other wellness programs. Located 1700 meters above sea level visitors have access to ski-in/ski-out accommodation, as well as the Biologique Recherche spa and glorious mountain views. 

Hôtel Mont-Blanc, Chamonix

Located in the heart of Chamonix, interior architect Sybille de Margerie has designed the interiors of the century-old establishment with contemporary finishes to compliment the typical architectural style of Chamonix. Since 1849 guests from all over the world have convened here to enjoy Europe’s highest mountain peak. There are wondrous views of Mont Blanc and the hotel is located just moments from shopping and the Brént cable car. Gourmands will enjoy the hotel’s restaurant too. According to chef Mickey Bourdillat, with a spectacular setting as that on which the hotel is situated, his only job is to let seasonal products shine. His cuisine journeys through the Alps down to the Mediterranean basin.

Airelles Val d’Isère

Another “ski-in, ski-out” establishment, this Alpine resort is all about the finer things in life. The natural materials are perfectly crafted by architect Christophe Tollemer and art historian Emmanuelle Vidal-Delagneau. Set in harmony with the surroundings the 41 rooms and suites, and five private apartments offer swoon-worthy mountain views. The vibe is wood paneled rooms, roaring fireplaces, velvet furnishings and historical artwork.

Its new restaurant Loulou offers Alpine cuisine along with traditional Italian fare in a convivial setting. The d’Isère Bar is a perfect place to lounge on the plush sofas sipping a delicious cocktail, fine wine or spirit.

Even the smallest guests are well taken care of at the Airelles Winter Camp, with games aplenty in the Brocéliande Forest. Finally, after a long work out or a full day on the slopes, what could be more relaxing than unwinding in the 1200 square meter Guerlin spa or a refreshing dip in the pool?
