Black has long been synonymous with chic sophistication- much like Paris. The color has been celebrated by Saint Laurent and Chanel, Renoir and O’Keefe. Today the shade is making its way to a métier perhaps as beloved in France as fashion and art: bread-making.
These four boulangeries are breaking the mold with their onyx creations:
Spicing up the Usual Baguette
Boulangerie Bo’s traditional façade is a trompe l’oeil considering what you’ll inside. While there are the typical boulangerie classics, Bo also has a number of inventive options. Dip a toe in and try the squid ink and cumin baguette. It has the texture of a tradition, but with a little added spice and pairs particularly well with a creamy chevre.
When you can’t resist the temptation of a freshly baked baguette, but you’re also trying to eat clean(-ish), opt for Boulangerie Utopie’s activated-charcoal version.
The jet-black ingredient has long been touted for its purifying and detoxifying properties. Whether true or not, the bread is worth a try.
An Indulgent Brunch
Hardware Société, the Montmartre brunch favorite with Aussie roots, has a tempting take on the black-bread trend. The Lobster Benedict: lobster, 64-degree eggs, hollandaise, and fresh herbs on a black brioche bun. It’s a guaranteed hit for anyone with a big appetite.
Gambette a Pain in the 20th has created a bread that is a harmonious blend of earthy and sweet. The bamboo charcoal bread is dotted with indulgent white chocolate bread, then topped with toasted sesame seeds that elevate both the flavor and texture profiles.
