Biglove Caffè: Hip Italian Brunch in Paris’ Marais

Discover Biglove Caffè, the Marais address from beloved Big Mamma Group

For the past few years, the Big Mamma Group has been the purveyor of fresh, delicious Italian cuisine in Paris, with most of their products – and even the staff – hailing from France’s southern neighbor. It was only a matter of time before the group jumped on the Paris brunch train, and we knew that once they did, it would not disappoint. Thus their answer to the classic Italian caffè opened its doors in Rose Bakery’s old Marais location, with an eclectic, épicerie-inspired twist.

Les French Desmoiselles: Ethical Fashion Made in France

HiP Paris, French Desmoiselles, Florie Berger

A mysterious event invitation showed up in my Facebook feed a little while back.

“Secret Christmas / Vente Très Très Privée Mode et Beauté” (“Very, Very Private Fashion and Beauty Sale”), it announced, presumably so exclusive that just one “very” wouldn’t do.

The invitation went on to reveal that somebody named Laurence would be welcoming shoppers into her cozy Paris apartment that Saturday, enticing invitees with the promise of treats, holiday fashions, and personalized beauty advice.

“If you wish to participate, email us so we can send you the address and door code for this secret rendez-vous”, the invitation instructed, stopping just short of adding, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it…”

The pre-adolescent Nancy Drew fan in me was intrigued.

Les Pinces: A New-England-Style Lobster Joint with a Parisian Twist

HiP Paris Les Pinces lobster spread

Le Marais is considered by many to be the dining capital of Paris with choices abound. Varying from take-out hot dogs on the corner of rue Vieille du Temple to falafels on the iconic rue des Rosiers to up-and-coming hipster hangouts where the design is equally as important as the menu, choosing a place to dine is a culinary experience in itself. One group of French restaurateurs with a penchant for North American travel decided what the chic quartier needed was a splash of something different, and opened a lobster joint.

Steering away from the opulence that could be equated with going out for lobster in Paris and taking a cue from Northeast lobster restaurants they frequented on their travels, friends Damien Borjesson, Remy Bougenaux, Vivien Mathieu, and Louis Kerveillant opened Les Pinces (meaning “claws” in French) in November 2014.

Miznon: Israeli Cuisine with a French Twist

HiP Paris blog. Miznon. Heart of the Marais.

The rue des Rosiers, an iconic street in Paris’ Marais neighborhood, is one of the few that remains reminiscent of the neighborhood’s Jewish community. Lined with Jewish bakeries and delis, this street is probably most well known for its falafel restaurants. Of the many choices, one falafel address reigns supreme: L’As du Fallafel, which is easily identifiable by its long lines and bright green façade. But a new kid on the block is pitting old pitas against new with the arrival of Miznon, an Israeli sandwich shop.

Dating in Paris: Three Romantic Itineraries Through Paris’ Hip Arrondissements

HiP Paris Blog, Carin Olsson, Dating in Paris

Dating in Paris is often a tricky business, particularly first dates. You’re so eager to make a good first impression – you need the perfect outfit, of course, but there’s also the pressure to pick a perfect location. You need a place that’s not too casual, lest it sneak into that ambiguous area known as “hanging out,” but you can’t go for a six-course tasting menu either. What if he turns out to be a dud and all you want to do is escape?

After much trial and error, I have come to love what I call “walking dates.” Start at a café for drinks or coffee, take a short stroll somewhere scenic, then – if it’s going well, of course – end at another establishment for a more substantial meal. There are built-in escape routes if it’s not going well, but if he turns out to be charming, there’s plenty of opportunity to get to know each other in several different settings.
