Workweek: cashmere jacket, chambray shirt, cotton trousers, and leather brogues.

Casual weekend: cotton t-shirt, cuffed selvedge denim jeans, and sneakers.

Parisian men certainly have an enviable ease when it comes to fashion, a skill presumably learned over years of cultural grooming. However, for the fashion-conscious dude new to the city, finding unique, quality garments outside the sea of luxury fashion houses can be tricky. Fortunately, three new-to-the-scene French menswear brands are reinventing the idea of classic style for the everyday man.

French menswear brand AMI

AMI

AMI

AMI’s name is derived from its founder and creative director, Alexandre Mattiussi, who, before launching the brand in 2011, had stints at Givenchy and Dior.

The brand revolves around Mattiussi’s idea of “dressing every man.” Each collection sees a range of elegantly tailored pieces paired alongside more casual options with sportswear influences.

For the essential French look, pick up a classic white t-shirt, relaxed pair of jeans, brogues (or sneakers for a more casual feel), and the oh-so-necessary tricolore AMI-embroidered sweatshirt.

Each of AMI’s Paris-based boutiques has been richly designed by architects at studio ko. Warm timbers set against rich stone and brass trimmings are reminiscent of a bygone French era during which dapper gentlemen opted for whiskey over beer. The brand now has three stores in Paris, one in Tokyo, and one in its newest location, London.

Officine Générale

In the last four years, Officine Générale has become one of the most promising new brands to storm onto the Paris menswear scene. The brainchild of Pierre Mahéo, Officine Générale offers a quintessentially classic French aesthetic, mixing traditional tailoring with workwear influences to create garments that would fit into any man’s wardrobe.

A result of Mahéos’ exposure to the production processes he experienced working at large menswear houses, Officine Générale works responsibly and only with quality fabrics, including Japanese selvedge denim, English tweed, and Italian cashmere.

Mix a linen shirt and casual suede or Italian nylon bomber jacket with a pair of pleated cotton pants for a comfortable yet refined style.

The brand has two stunning boutiques in Paris: one in the trendy Haut Marais, the other hidden within the elegant streets of Saint-Germain.

Études Studio

Études Studio is just that: a “study” of the creative arts. Founded in 2012 by Aurélien Arbet and Jérémie Egry, in collaboration with stylist José Lamali and publisher Nicolas Poillot, Études Studio is a collaborative umbrella integrating fashion with publishing and creative consultancy. With well-established backgrounds in the arts (Aurélien having studied graphic art and Jérémie fine arts), the studio seeks to create a global vision of contemporary design that is driven by experimentation.

The showroom, located in a former art gallery in the Haut Marais, provides the perfect location to illustrate the brand’s narrative in Paris (their second studio is located in New York). The expansive space is a salute to the Études Studio’s minimalist aesthetic. Designed by renowned French architectural firm, Ciguë, a monotone palate of concrete, grey glass, and recycled paper fibers hides within an unsuspecting Parisian courtyard.

Preferring the term urbain, the style combines sportswear and classicism with obvious postmodern influences. Aimed at the more experimental man, expect to find heavier, oversized silhouettes in a range of monotone colors, with occasional bursts of graphic prints. The brand’s most recent collection saw a collaboration with skateboard legend-poet-artist, Mark Gonzales. The collection consisted of the brand’s iconic, oversized button-down shirt and tote bags carrying original artwork from “The Gonz,” in true streetwear style. The release was also paired with a DIY zine of Mark’s poetry and artwork.
